My Verkada licence has expired. What happens now?
Command is what you lose — remote viewing, device configuration, alarm notifications, event alerts, user management. The cameras carry on recording to a console nobody can use. Here is the timeline, from Verkada’s own documentation, and what to do about it today.
What happens, and when
Verkada’s own documentation sets this out. We have not embellished it.
- 1
Thirty days before expiry — the warning
Verkada emails the administrators on the Command organisation to say the licences are about to expire. If nobody in your organisation recognises that email, it is usually because it went to someone who has left. That is the single most common reason a licence lapses.
- 2
Expiry day — nothing visible happens
This is the part that catches people out. On the day the licence expires you will very likely notice nothing at all. Cameras record, Command opens, footage plays.
- 3
The grace period — the window you are probably in
Verkada allows a short grace period in which everything keeps working and a renewal is still straightforward. It is a courtesy, not an entitlement, and it is the last cheap moment: renewals are priced at the current list, and that list went up on 5 June 2026. If you are reading this, send us the schedule today rather than at the end of it.
- 4
After the grace period — Command goes
You lose access to most of Command: device configuration, alarm notifications and event alerts. The console stops being the thing you bought it for. You do keep access to the licence manager and the support pages, which is how you get back.
What actually stops, and what does not
We would rather you made this decision on the facts than on a scare.
Your cameras keep recording
The hardware does not brick itself and footage does not vanish. Anyone telling you an expired licence wipes your cameras is selling you something.
Command stops being useful
Configuration, alerting and the day-to-day console access are what go. In practice that means nobody gets notified when something happens, and nobody can change anything.
Alarms stop notifying
If you are relying on Verkada alarms or event alerts to tell somebody something, that is the part that actually matters, and it is the part that stops.
Nothing is deleted because you were late
Cloud retention is governed by the licence you had. Renewing does not restore a retention window that has already rolled off, but lapsing does not trigger a purge either.
In order of how quickly it helps
Find the expiry date first
It is in Command, and it takes about a minute. Here is where to look. Knowing whether you are inside the grace period changes what we do next.
Count what you actually still have
A lapsed renewal is the best opportunity you will get to stop paying for cameras that came down two years ago. Build the schedule from what is really there.
Get it priced, then decide
We come back within one working day with confirmed part numbers and a price. Nothing is charged, and you are committed to nothing until you approve a written quotation.
If the grace period is nearly up, ring us
Do not use a form. 01727 822 833, and say the licences have expired. We will pick it up the same day.
One thing that is genuinely worth knowing
Renewals are priced at Verkada’s current list, not the list you originally bought at. Verkada raised prices on 5 June 2026 and said explicitly that customers who bought before then would not pay the higher prices “until they renew their licenses or expand their deployment”. So if your last renewal was a while ago, expect the number to have moved — and expect anyone who does not warn you about that in advance to be hoping you will not notice. What changed, in detail.
Common questions
Can I renew after the licence has already expired?
Will I be charged for the gap?
Do I lose my footage?
Can I renew directly with Verkada instead?
We did not get the warning email. Whose fault is that?
