What a Verkada licence actually covers
The reasonable question behind every renewal: we already bought the cameras, so what exactly are we paying for again?
You bought the hardware. The licence is what makes it a system.
A Verkada camera records to itself. Without a licence it is a camera with storage in it. What the licence buys is everything that turns a set of cameras into something a person can actually use across a site or an estate.
That is not a small distinction, but it is worth being clear-eyed about, because it is the difference between a renewal being an obvious yes and an argument with your finance director.
Command, on the web and on a phone
One login across every site, with unlimited users. This is the bit people actually use every day.
AI search across people, vehicles and motion
Finding the thing you are looking for in minutes rather than scrubbing through hours of footage. For most sites this is the feature that justifies the whole system.
Cloud retention, where the licence includes it
Footage held off the camera, so an incident survives the camera being stolen, smashed or unplugged.
Firmware and security updates
An internet-connected camera that stops receiving security updates becomes a liability on your network. This is the least visible part of the licence and arguably the most important.
Verkada’s own technical support
Phone and email, direct to the manufacturer, on top of whatever your installer provides.
Alerting that reaches a named person
Alarm and event notifications to the people who are supposed to act on them — which is the part that stops when a licence lapses.
What a licence does not cover
- The hardware warranty is separate. Verkada quotes a warranty of up to ten years depending on the model, and it is not the same thing as the licence.
- Installation, maintenance and changes. That is us, or whoever installed it — a licence does not send anyone to site.
- Monitoring. If your alarms are monitored by a centre, that is a contract of its own on top of the alarm licence.
- A public-address system. Verkada has no mass-notification or PA product. The horn speaker is a talk-down speaker, and it is worth saying so plainly.
- UK data residency. Verkada’s regions do not include a UK one. If that matters to your DPIA, it matters whether you renew or not, and you should know it either way.
Common questions
Is the licence per camera or per site?
If we stop paying, do we own anything?
Does a longer licence include more features?
